Why windows are an overlooked exposure
Window replacement is sold as an energy upgrade with a tidy crew and a one-day schedule. Nobody frames it as demolition, so nobody thinks about asbestos.

What glazing putty is and why it contained asbestos
Glazing putty is the compound that beds and seals glass into a wooden or metal sash. It needs to stay flexible enough to accommodate movement and hard enough to hold a seal for decades.
Asbestos fibers were added to putties, caulks and mastics for exactly that reason — they improve tensile strength and resist cracking. That makes glazing compound a routine positive in buildings of the era.
Hardened putty is removed by scraping, chiselling or heating. All three release material directly into the working zone.
